Around 50 female fighters showed up in Vegas Monday to be a part of MMA history.

For the first time in the series history, UFC’s reality show “The Ultimate Fighter” will feature women competing for a UFC contract. It will also be the first season of female coaches in UFC champ Ronda Rousey and #1 contender Cat Zingano.

Among those trying out were veteran fighter Tara LaRosa, Tonya Evinger, and Shayna Baszler. InvictaFC fighters Jessamyn Duke, Sarah Moras, and Jocelyn Lybarger were also hoping to make the cut. Also, fighters from Canada, England, and Japan also made the long journey to be a part of the tryouts. 24 fighters will fight it out in the first episode to see who will make it on the season.

After grappling and striking evaluations, those who were still in the running did interviews to hopefully make the show. The UFC stated they will not announce who made the show until they start shooting this summer.

Holly Holm to Leave Boxing; Focus on MMA After May

$

Boxing champ Holly Holm has decided to permanently make the switch to MMA.

Holm (32-2-3 boxing; 3-0 MMA) announced the decision to drop out of boxing Monday at a media luncheon at the Albuquerque International Airport. The official switch will happen after her final boxing match with Mary McGee May 11 at the Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque, NM.

Holm currently holds the IBA and WBF boxing titles and was looking to face WBO/WBA/WBC champ Cecilia Braekhus this fall. The announcement put the kibosh on the epic encounter. Braekhus told a Norwegian website that a rematch with Anne Sophie Mathis would most likely be the next fight for her.

Holm’s transition to MMA has been relatively smooth with three TKO’s to her credit. Her latest outing at Bellator saw her outstrike Katie Merrill to a second round win. The publicity for the fight and social media reaction may have been a big part of the swtich, as well as fighting more often, and doing the switch while the 31 year old is still in her prime.

InvictaFC has shown interest in Holm, and a possible slot for her to fight on the InvictaFC 6 card is a great possibility. Her management team has also held MMA cards in the past, so don’t expect Holm to wait for a fight.

On a side not, Holm would be inducted into the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame in June.

This has been a long week for the WMMA world, seeing the amount of talent in once place for the Ultimate Fighter Tryouts in Las Vegas. Although we can’t say who is officially still in the running, you can conjecture who is out and who is still in Vegas. (The tryouts end Friday, and we won’t know the cast until this summer.)

MMAFighting sent the MMA’s visual powerhouse couple Ester Lin and E. Casy Leydon  to take pictures and video of the first ever female tryout. The list is basically a who’s who of the 125, 135, and 145 divisions.

The UFC is being aggressive in their campaign to build their new women’s bantamweight division, as they set another match-up for July.

Veteran fighter Julie Kedzie (16-11) will take on Muay Thai champion Germaine de Randamie (3-2) at “UFC on Fox 8″ in Seattle, WA. The ,match was announced Wednesday.

Kedzie lost her last two matches to two of the top six in the division, Miesha Tate and Alexis Davis, and is looking to get back on the winning track. She would be submitted by Tate in her last fight in August at Strikeforce; while taking Davis the distance.

De Randamie is once again dropping to 135 after getting a win over ranked featherweight Hiroko Yamanaka this past August.  She lost to current InvictaFC 145 title contender Julia Budd in June. She has found better success at 135, going 2-1.

The match will most likely be relegated to the preliminary card, which will be broadcast on FX.

Holm at Tuesday’s Press Conference

With the announcement of Holly Holm leaving boxing for the greener pastures of MMA, there is some worry that many in the sweet science may jump ship. While Holm is a unique case (she trains at one of the best MMA gyms on the planet), boxer Jessica Rakoczy is looking to get back in the MMA game, and while Stacey Reile is looking into MMA training.

As we look into the sport of women’s boxing, it still has a legacy. It’s more international now, with countries like Mexico and Germany having female matches four to six times a month. It has been a while since we have seen a televised female fight in the states. Major boxing cards rarely have a female undercard bout that is aired on pay-per-view or cable channels. In contrast, women’s division in MMA has seen increased coverage, with many organizations having at least one female match on their cards. The UFC has stepped up with getting a slot once a month to their growing women’s divisions.

A lot of female boxers are frustrated and for good reason. Promoters in the U.S. have been neglecting who could be a valuable resource in terms of making the sport popular again. The rise of women’s boxing in the Olympics has seen stars such as Marlen Esparza and Mikaela Mayer getting deals with Cover Girl and Dr. Pepper respectively. Both are still perusing amateur careers and hope for 2016 Olympic slots. Yet the pros aren’t getting great sponsorship deals, and not being profiled as they should.

Why? One reason is that promoters are still stuck in the “One or two match” model of marketing cards, which is so 20th century. The MMA model makes sure that undercard fighters get announced as a part of the card. Besides the fact the people feel they are getting more bang for their ppv buck, they get more fighters interesting in self promotion.

On the boxers’ end, they are starting to find out the secret about getting some promotion as a fighter – the use of social media. Many have taken to twitter to start rallying the fans and getting their fights on TV. This is something female MMA fighters have learned over the past three years, and it has been success. Ronda Rousey’s rocketship to stardom wouldn’t have been as fast if it weren’t for her twitter account.

A good portion of women’s MMA popularity is the MMA media community in general. Many of the top sites were based on homegrown journalists in the digital age. Boxing sites are less relevant with them focusing on only the top fighters in the divisions and televised fights. Little coverage is given to those working their way up. The notable exception is WBAN.com, which has been a leader in women’s boxing coverage.

Boxing as a whole needs to change with the times, and look into making superstars out of more than just a relegated few. Female fighters especially have a marketable edge if Esparza and Mayer have any indication. Besides the marketing, “the fairer sex” are just as aggressive in a boxing ring as they are in a cage.

We can only hope the boxing promoters and media evolve with the times and give these fighters an opportunity to shine,

Rumors

The UFC currently has a “don’t ask, don’t tell policy” when it comes to those still in the running for being on “Tough Enough”. Although we can’t conjecture on who made the cast, we can easily conjecture who isn’t depending on the booking of fighters in the next few months. Best example is Allanna Jones, who we announced earlier is going to fight Fallon Fox as scheduled. We will have some more names next week.

Stephanie Eggink gets a hard fought decision win over Brianna Van Buren at XFC 23 in Louisville, KY. Van Buren was no push over by any means, as she was able to take Eggink down and used her strength to escape a triangle attempt using a slam. Body shots and a knee helped Van Buren control the clinch later in the round. She fended off a guillotine attempt by Eggink at the end of the round.

Eggink fared better in round two with submission attempts off her back. It would be a back and forth third round as Van Buren and Eggink slugged it out to start out. Van Buren would get another takedown, but Eggink again worked towards submissions. Eggink was able to take Van Buren’s back and attempted a rear named choke as the final bell rang. Eggink would take the unanimous decision.

XFC will return June 14th in Tampa, FL with a strawweight bout rumored for the telecast.
