Due to a visa issue, Cindy Dandois had to withdraw from her fight next week with Kaitlin Young at InvictaFC. The new broke Friday afternoon.

The promotion didn’t take long to find a replacement. InvictaFC 2 vet Raquel Pa’aluhi will head back to the cage to take on Young. The Hawaiian fighter snapped a three fight losing streak August of last year, with a TKO win over Priscilla White.Having faced some of the top talent in the division, No-gi world champion Pa’aluhi has grown as a fighter in the past year, and a win over a vet in Young would help her gain some more momentum.

Young (7-8) is looking to snap a three fight losing streak.

InvictaFC 9 will be live in Davenport Iowa November 1 and will stream for $10 on UFC Fight Pass.

Courtney King and Jennah Macallister Announced for Rock’n’Rumble

king vs macallisterTwo of Colorado’s up and coming amateur bantamweights are preparing to square off.

Fort Collins’s Courtney King (1-1) and Bloomfield’s Jennah Macallister (1-1) are set to for Rock’n’Rumble in Denver November 21. Both come from up and coming local gyms (Z’s Traing Gym and A-Art of War respectfully) and are looking to get a winning record.

“I started training a while ago when one of my friends pretty much dragged me into Z’s gym,” King remembers. “It didn’t take long for me to love the sport and after my coach encouraged me to compete that eventually lead to me fighting MMA and after I won my first fight I haven’t looked back since.”

“I started fighting because I found out that women were getting more and more into it and it struck my interest,” Macallister  explained “I just wanted to train though and not fight, but my trainer suggested I get into some tournaments and I did so.”

This isn’t the first time the two fought in a combat situation. Macallister’s first ever grappling tournament saw her lose to King.

It doesn’t detour Macallister, however.

“I don’t think there will be any advantage for either of us having had that grappling match,” Macallister tells us.  “It’s been a long time and we’ve both changed and are different fighters. Plus we start the tournament standing but bodies aren’t crashing into each other like they will in the cage.”

“I don’t have any thoughts on her. I know she had fought before and I respect her as a fighter,” King stated about Macallister. “I’m there to win. I’m ready to do whatever it takes to do it and more than ready to go through whatever she can throw at me to win.”

“Courtney is a great fighter from a really well established and respected gym,” Macallister added. “She is a great challenge and I already lost to her once in competition so there is a definite element of revenge for me when I look at this fight.”

“Expect a great fight, but maybe don’t expect all three rounds this time.”

The fight will be a part of the Rock’n’Rumble card, which will feature a concert by multi-platinum recording artists P.O.D.

The event will take place at the National Western Complex on November 21.

TUF 20 Episode 6 – Daly Continues Team Pettis’s Run

10636085_10152766163711276_2069263769423677681_nTwo fighters overcoming psychological hurdles battled in the sixth fight of the tournament.

Before Aisling Daly and Angela Magana squared off, we got a look into both of their stories. Magana told us her mother was a drug addict and having to put a needle in her arm because of the bad state she was in. Magana would also talk about losing her fiance after a tragic accident when she broke her back, and nearly dying. After all of this, she has come to peace with her past.

Daly had suffered from anxiety attacks and depression and had to take most of 2013 off. She battles it every day, but has been able to get back to fighting. Daly has been having problems with the dry Vegas air in terms of her training, but assures UFC President Dana White she is okay. However, she asks to see her teammates fight at UFC Dublin, and White obliges. Patrick Holohan gives Daly a shout out on the card.

The only other plot line that was the talked about was the continued alienation of Tecia Torres by Team Pettis. Torres’s first opponent Randa Markos was the first to put out an olive branch.

The fight itself was one of the best fights so far this season. Magana used her grappling to control Daly in round one, with Magana having a several rear naked choke attempts. Magana was working on Daly’s back as Daly was standing up with referee Chris Tognoni separating the fights for no reason at all.

Round two saw Daly get the upperhand, gaining the striking advantage and ultimately a takedown. Daly took the back and Magan fough back to half guard, abnd started to stand up. Daly would get the takedown again and take Magana’s back for the neck crank attempt before the round ended. This would tie up the score and a third period was warrented.

Magana seemed gassed, and Daly fough through a head kick to take Magana’s back as Daly got another takedown. Magana;s arm was trapped on her own throat, Daly landed ground and pound and the referee stops the contest at  2:26 of round 3.

Daly will face Jessica Penne in the semi-finals.

Next week, we will see Team Malendez’s Rose Namajunas take on Team Pettis’s Alex Chambers in the 7th fight.

InvictaFC Primer with Pa’aluhi, Inoue, and Brown

Paaluhi Curtesy Scott Hirano/InvictaFC

With InvictaFC 9 tonight, we do have some representation there.

Our good friend, Asian WMMA expert, and writer of the CJ Report Charlie is our eyes and ears  in Davenport, Iowa. He was able to get some interviews with three of tonight’s participants.

Raquel Pa’aluhi talked about her current move to Vegas and her improved ground game.

“I went to a fight camp at X’Treme Couture and at Drysdale. I trained at the same time that Miesha was training for her fight, but my fight fell through so I was was kinda sitting there. Now that I  know what’s here, I thought I’d be hurting myself if I went back home. So I went home for 10 days, called my dad and mentioned that I wanted to stay in Vegas. My friends said they would help me out, my dad sold my car for me, while I was home I packed my stuff and sold what I didn’t.”

You can read the rest of Pa’aluhi’s interview here.

Mizunki Inoue was of few words, but did talk about her fight with Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

“Karolina is a very good striker that is also good on the ground. I think that the fight might turn into a ground battle, which is ok with me because I want to show what I can do on the ground.”

You can read the rest of Inoue’s interview here.

It’ll be Amber Brown’s InivtcaFC debut as the top 5 atomweight looks to solidify her spot at atomweight.Charlie asked about how she improved since beating a top 5 fight in her last outing and what to expect tonight.

“I’m going to be aggressive, forward pressure in her face, she should expect the knees, maybe go to the body more, I wanted to do that against Kikuyo Ishikawa, but I really wanted to hit her in the head. I’m a lot better at everything now, everything has come a long way.”

You can read Brown’s full interview here.

Charlie will be at the post fight presser asking questions for Wombat Sports as well. You can catch the post fight presser stream on our site after the event.

InvictaFC President Shannon Knapp announced the last InvictaFC of the year will be heading to Houston December 5th.

With the news of Cyborg Justino out due to a knee injury, Michelle Waterson will step up once again to defend her atomweight title against Brazilian Herica Tiburcio. Tiburcio (8-2) has won three straight and took current UFC strawweight Claudia Gadelha the distance. Tiburcio was set to fight at Invicta 9, but a visa issue had negated her debut.

Waterson dominated Yasuko Tamada in her first title denfence at InvictaFC 8.

Knapp also announced two more fights, including a bantamweight co-main event between Tonya Evinger and Cindy Dadnois. Evinger is currently in Houston training; and Dandois looks to refutrn to action after a few years absence.

In what will most likely be a #1 contenders match, Roxanne Modafferi and Vanessa Porto will battle in a flyweight contest.

The full card will be announced this week. The event will stream on UFC Fight Pass December 5.

InvictaFC 9 Wrap-Up: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

$
0
0

If you didn’t get enough blood Halloween night, you got plenty Saturday night in Davenport, Iowa.

Several fighters went to war at InvictaFC 9, with battle scars to prove it. All but one fight went to decision, but most of them kept fans intrigued with displays of amazing striking and some ground work.

Here is our quick summary over events (Photos Courtesy Scott Hirano, Invicta FC):

The Good

Andrea Lee and Jamie Moyle – Breakout Stars of the Night

Lee

Lee

Moyle

Moyle

The future looks bright for two new faces to Invicta.

Andrea Lee is one of the best strikers we’ve seen coming from the amateur ranks, and she didn’t disappoint in her second pro fight. Lee’s striking was not only creative, but crisp and on point. Lee’s mat work was solid as well. Props to Shannon Sinn for hanging in there against a tough opponet, but Lee could be the future of the flyweight division.

Tuff-n-uff tournament winner and pro debuter Jamie Moyle also showed some impressive striking in her win over Jenny Liou. Syndicate MMA has improved Roxanne Modafferi’s striking game, and Moyle goes to show that it wasn’t a fluke by any stretch of the imagination the Vegas based gym is one to look out for. Liou was still a game fighter on the ground, but Moyle could develop as a big part of the new wave of strawweights in Invicta.

Moyle would get a “Performance of the Night” award for her efforts.

McCarthy

McCarthy

McCarthy Proved Worthy in Atomweight Loss; Brown in Title Hunt

In what was a closer battle than we expected, Liz McCarthy showed better control on the ground in the later rounds of her fight with the #4 ranked Amber Brown. It was the blood that McCarthy was displaying on her face that gave Brown the unanimous decision win, but McCarthy looked great in the loss and this setback won’t be a big one going into her next fight.

As for Brown, she solidifies her ranking and is one step closer to getting a world title shot. Her striking is there, but her ground game needs some serious work before considering a run for the gold.

The Bad (Ass)

Kowalkiewicz vs. Mizuki

Kowalkiewicz vs. Mizuki

Mizuki and Kowalkiewicz’s Striking War was a Thing of Beauty

Some people thought Invitca’s strawweight talent would diminish once the UFC took a good chunk of the fighters for TUF 20. These past two cards proved that wrong.

Seeing Mizuki (she decided to drop the “Inoue”) and  Karolina Kowalkiewicz in the cage was like seeing two of the top pro boxers on the planet trade. There wasn’t too many “ahh” moments, but Mizuki’s speed versus Kowalkiewicz using distance saw technique on display, in a fight that could have went either way.

Kowalkiewicz took the split, but Mizuki should not be ashamed at her performance at all. This took “Fight of the Night” honors and could be a candidate for “Fight of the Year”.

Bell

Bell

Beast Mode Award – Amanda Bell

Amanda Bell seemed pretty happy and ready to do some damage when she entered the arena. Bell dominate Maria Hougaard for 4:56 before the ref stopped the fight in the only finish of the night. No clue why she didn’t get a Performance of the Night Bonus (or why she wasn’t on the dais at the post fight presser).

If Cyborg vacates the 145 title, Bell seems primed to fill that spot.

Pa'aluhi

Pa’aluhi

Pa’aluhi’s Breakthrough Moment

Pa’aluhi is always someone interested in fighting the best, which has cost her some losses in the past. Last night, we saw those losses pay off.

Kaitlin Young punished Raquel Pa’aluhi through the first round of their fight, but Pa’aluhi never let it discourage her. Having a strong wrestling game, Pa’aluhi went to the ground where Young has had trouble in the past. Pa’aluhi would take the last two rounds and get the win and a Performance of the Night award to boot.

Pa’aluhi is now one of the top bantamweight prospects in Invicta and has helped the division become relevant again.

The Ugly

Honchak vs. Hashi

Honchak vs. Hashi

The Curse of the Clinch

Takayo Hashi had a game plan and it helped her survive five rounds with champion Barb Honchak, but it didn’t win the battle at all.

Honchak tried to engage in striking with Hashi, only for Hashi to take it to the cage wall to use clinch work. Honchak, to her credit, was using short range striking and was better at pummeling and reversing position. The only highlight was Hashi eventually getting a trip takedown from the position, but otherwise it wasn’t an exciting fight to end the night.

Part of the blame could go to the ref, who might have broke it off a bit more often then he did. You really can’t blame Honchak, who we suspect will have better fights with dance partners in the wings.

The Two Fighters that Missed Weigh Didn’t Look Stellar

Maegan Goodwin wasn’t mentally there against Kelly McGill, and part of the blame could be due to her grandfather’s passing. I don’t think people would have judged her if she pulled out due to a family emergency, but missing weight and losing the way means she needs to work that much harder in her next fight to earn some respect from the fans

Maria Hougaard needs to take a step back and re-think how to proceed in her career. With a great record in Europe, she may think about training in the US for a period of time so her game can compete with a higher class of competition.

Other Musing

Kaitlin Young Still Game but Needs to Take Her Time

Outside of Ronda Rousey, the Glendale Fight Club’s female team has been in a slump. Young only recently joined the team and her grappling game is in need of some major work.

Young still proved the reason why Invicta loves her – she bring exciting fights whenever she hits the cage. Once she gets another 8-12 months in with Rousey and Shayna Baszler, she could be one of the top fighters in the division again.

Colonac vs. Esquibel

Colonac vs. Esquibel

Nicdali Rivera-Colonac’s Last Hurrah

Nicdali didn’t really get her head in the game against Jodie Esquibel and it may have sparked the retirement of the 10 year vet of the sport.

Having won only once on her past 5 fights, Nicdali has on several occasions pondered hanging up the gloves. With back to back losses to fighters that are two of the best in the division and a .500 record, it is a pretty good time for her to help the next generation of fighters and end what could be a solid argument for WMMA Hall of Fame inclusion.

November 2014 Rankings – Busy Weekend Gains Quick Impact

$

0

After a busy weekend of about two dozen pro WMMA fights across the world, we have seen some interesting changes to Unfiied rankings.

Since InvictaFC 9 happened Saturday, the Unified Committee decided to include Saturday’s results. However, the DEEP-JEWELS results on Monday morning will be included in December’s rankings.

Also several inactive fighters have been dropped off the list…

Coenen vs. Bucci courtesy Bellator

Coenen vs. Bucci courtesy Bellator

InvictaFC champion Cyborg Justino has been left off the featherweight rankings due to inactivity. Bellator’s Marloes Coenen regains the top spot after her win over Annalisa Bucci. The undefeated Pannie Kianzad is now #2 in the division, followed by Bellator’s Julia Budd (#3) and Invicta’s Faith Van Duin (#4).

Bucci’s loss to Coenen drops her a spot to #6, and Talita Nogueira takes her place at #5. Maria Hougaard’s loss to Amanda Bell drops her out of the top 10, with Bell debuting at #9.Tweet (#8) and Gabrielle Holloway (#10) round out the featherweight top 10.

The top 5 in the strawweights remain the same this month (TUF 20 fighters are exempt from dropping out); however, Karolina Kowalkiewicz’s win over Mizunki Inoue at Invicta gains the Polish fight the #6 spot. Inoue drops to #10.

Lacey Schukman’s inactivity in the atomweight division drops her out of the rankings, giving Jodie Esquibel the #5 spot after her win over Nicdali Rivera-Colonac this past weekend. The rest of the top 10 remains the same.

Bantamweight stays pat this month.

Several flyweight fighters will be dropping this month and in December to strawweight, so we expect some major changes come the end of the month.

You can see the entire Unified Women’s Rankings here.

Two female bouts were announced for North Dakota’s “Beatdown MMA” 12th November 29 in New Town, ND Monday night.
